Nere Nambidhe – Lyrics

I had written down the lyrics for this song when I first heard my father sing this a long time ago, may be around 15 years back. Now, I have many books which my Parents have given me which has all the lyrics for any sloka or devotional song I need. I still have this book since it brings back old memories. I took a picture of the page which had this song on Lord Panduranga. So, here comes the lyrics in Kannada and English as well.

Quick and Easy Potato Palya

Potato Palya

Potato Palya

It is customary in our Madhwa families to make two palyas and two kosambaris during any occasion. As I have mentioned many times onion, garlic, and for that matter even carrot isn’t used. So, coming next month is Shrava masa right? So, if you are following tradition and want to make two Palyas here is one you can do in minutes: Aloogade Palya.

Ingredients:

  • 4 Potatoes
  • 3 Green Chillies slit lenghtwise
  • 1 sprig curry leaves finely chopped
  • 3-4 springs coriander leaves finely chopped
  • 1 inch ginger finely grated
  • Lemon juice to taste
  • salt to taste
  • 2 tsp oil, 1/4 tsp mustard seeds, 1/2 tsp jeera, and 1/4 tsp haldi

Method:

  1. Clean, boil and remove the skin of the potatoes. Chop into bite size pieces. You can boil them traditional way or use microwave.
  2. Next, in a pan heat oil. Add mustard seeds, jeera, green chiilies, curry leaves and Haldi. Fry for 2-3 minutes.
  3. Next, add potatoes, and grated ginger. Keep frying for another 3-4 minutes on low heat.
  4. Finally, add salt, and coriander leaves.
  5. Just before serving, add the lemon juice.

Chatnipudi Anna(Rice) – Brings back fond memories

We all have eaten this during our school days in India right? Why should our kids miss anything we have done? I try to recollect and tell my daughter every single thing we did while we were kids. And also try to make sure she gets to enjoy as much,at least the food part. I know you all have fond memories of chatnipudi as well, but who can resist chatnipudi Anna right?

Chatni Pudi Anna

Chatni Pudi Anna

My Mom sent chatnipudi from India just 3 weeks back. It is sooo tasty. Thanks Mom. We have been eating it with almost everything; dosa, idli, rice. And, now when we have any leftover rice, the only thing my Daughter asks is “Amma, can you make me chatnipudi anna”?. It tastes so good. I am sure many of you have already eaten this, but if not here is what you need.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups left over rice
  • 4 spoons chatnipudi
  • 3 spoons oil or ghee
  • salt to taste

Venkata Ramanane Baaro – Lyrics

My Mysore Ajji used to sing this song a lot. She learnt Karnatak Music and teached us many many songs. This time when I go to India, and visit her in Mysore, I sure will record some songs and post it here. I forgot to mention, my Ajji is 91 years old.

However, you can listen to the song at the following site:

Vandipe Ninage Gananatha – Lyrics

There is no festival or any function being performed before doing pooje to Lord Ganesha; he removes the obstacles from your path. So here comes one of the popular Ganesha Stotras in English and a screen shot followed in Kannada.

Kadhi Madhwa Style in Minutes

I called it Majjige Huli, My husdand said it tasted like Kadhi, my daughter said it was some kind of sauce eaten with Nicchina Unde. So, finally I decided I will say this is Kadhi Madhwa Style since it has the basic ingredients we use for Majji Huli minus the vegetables.

This was the majjige Huli or Kadhi I prepared with Nucchina Unde which I posted in my previous post. It took less than 15 minutes to prepare this. The traditional Madhwa recipe I have takes a little longer. I am not sure if I have posted that one, if not, I sure will do post the recipe for that one as well. The traditional one usually has either cucumber or pumpkin vegetable. This one doesn’t have anything. So, here comes the recipe for the same.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups yoghurt
  • 2 cups water
  • 4 tsp besan
  • 3 green chillies slit
  • 7-8 curry leaves
  • 2 tsp Ginger grated
  • I/4 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/4 tsp Jeera
  • Haldi, and hing to color and taste
  • Salt to taste
  • Sugar to taste

Method:

  • In a blender, grind together yoghurt, water, besan and ginger. Make sure there are no lumps from the besan.
  • Next, in a vessel, heat oil and add mustard seeds, jeera, green chillies, hing, haldi and curry leaves as shown below.

  • Next, add the ground yoghurt with the besan mixture as shown below.

  • Let it boil on sim on the gas stove for a few minutes. At this point, the Majjige huli becomes thick. As shown below:

Quick and Easy Nucchina Unde

There are many ways on how to prepare Nucchina Unde. I wanted to do something quick and easy. So, I try to come up with things which speed up my cooking, since I hardly have anytime these days for cooking. As I was preparing this, my Daughter clicked all the pictures for me, since the schools are closed. So, here comes the recipe for Nucchina Unde the easiest you can ever make. I used a combination of both Channa dal and Toor dal. In the typical Nucchina Unde recipe, you will however see just Toor dal.

Ingredients:

  • 1 and 1/2 cups Channa dal
  • 1 cup Toor dal
  • 1/4 bunch corainder leaves
  • 10 curry leaves
  • Green chillies to taste
  • 3 tsp fresh coconut – grated
  • 1/2 inch ginger – grated
  • Hing to taste
  • Salt to taste

Method:

  • Soak both the dals in water for at least 4 hours. Later, drain the water as shown below.
  • Grind in a blender all the ingredients as listed above along with the drained dals.
  • Don’t add any water at all. Just for a change I didn’t add Haldi, you can do so and see a little bit yellowish colored Nucchina Unde.
  • As my Daughter said, it looks like Ambode mixture. And she tasted it and said it tastes like that as well. I never taste anything while cooking, so no idea if they taste the same. If you do try this recipe, and taste it, let me know. :)
  • Now grease a flat stell vessel lightly, make oval shaped balls and steam in a pressure cooker for 15-20 minutes until they are done.
  • Serve with Majjige Huli or Khadi. I came up with another quick and easy way of preparing Majjige Huli or Khadi as my daughter kept saying it was. Stay tuned for the next post.

Raya Baro Thande Thayi Baro – Lyrics

This was the song taught to me by my Aunt, Ratna Atte (Father’s Sister) when I was in 10th grade. I have been singing this ever since, and everyone in our family do so when we do Seva for Shri Raghavendra Swamy. Here are the lyrics for Raya Baro Thande Thayi Baro lyrics in Kannada. I will post the lyrics in English as soon as I get time to translate the same.
