Mahalaya Amavasya – October 7th 2010

This year in the Vikruthinama Samvatsara, Mahalaya Amavasya falls on October 7th 2010. Mahalaya Paksha is a fortnight  for ancestral worship. Mahalaya Paksha precedes Mahalaya Amavasya. The pitru tarpana given during this time is a way of showing gratitude to your departed ancestors.

I am not sure about what actually is done; because in our Madhwa community women are not allowed to even enter the room. Attached below is a link which may be helpful.

Dasara/Navarathri-September 19th to 28th 2009

Dasara is celebrated all over India as a religious as well as a social festival. Nava means nine and rathri means night and so Navarathri means nine nights. Some call it as Navarathri, some as Vijaya Dashami, and some as Dussehra. Doesn’t matter what you call, does it? Even though all the 10 days and nine nights are important, there are 3 major days where pooja is done with great devotion and pomp.

This year Dasara is celebrated from September 19th-28th 2009.

Those days are as follows:

1.Durgasthami – September 26th 2009. You can read last years post about this day here.

2. – Saraswathi Pooja – Ayodha Pooja - September 27th 2009 You can read last years post about this day here.

3. Vijaya Dashami – September 28th 2009 Read last years post here.

Devotional Songs for Dasara:

Kayi Kadabu – Fresh Coconut Kadabu

So many of you had asked for the recipe for Kayi Kadabu during Ganesha Festival. I had not prepared this one in a long long time. However, I had no time in the morning to prepare this version of the Kadabu for the Lord, I did it in the evening. For a recipe visited after many years, it was a super hit and everyone in my family and my Sister’s loved it. They said it tasted better than the Dry Coconut Kadabu. :)

SO, here is what you require for preparing this.

Ingredients for the Coconut Filling:

  • 2 and 1/2 cups freshly grated coconut
  • 2 and 1/2 cups Brown Sugar, or Powdered Jaggery
  • 5 Cardamom
  • 2 tsp Poppy Seeds, Gasgase fried in Ghee (optional)

Method:

  • In a heavy bottomed pan , mix both the Coconut and Jaggery as shown below.

  • Keep stirring the mixture and make sure it doesn’t stick to the bottom and burn.
  • After, 10-15 minutes, the mixture will change its color to dark brown
  • If it is too think, just add 2-3 drops of water.
  • Once it becomes thick, add the ground Cardamom, and Poppy seeds.

Ingredients for the Dough: This is exactly the same dough I used for the Dry Coconut Kadabu.

* 2 cups all purpose flour or maida
* 1/4 cup fine sooji or Rave or Rava
* pinch of salt
* 2 tsp oil

Method:

  1. In a bowl, mix all the ingredients listed in the dough; except oil.
  2. Heat oil and add it to the dough.
  3. Mix all of them again, make sure the oil is mixed well with the flour.
  4. Add water and make a dough.
  5. Keep it aside for an hour.
  6. Now roll the dough into circles, like poori. These pooris should be as thin as possible. Since it is maida flour, it stretches a lot.
  7. Fill the coconut filling, fold the edges and seal by applying water and closing them tightly.
  8. Fry them on medium heat in oil.

P.S: One of the Kadabu wasn’t closed tightly, and so some of the filling mixed with the Oil. I had to trun off the stove, let the oil cool down, strain the oil and continue. So, closing the kadabus tightly is the key to this recipe.

Quick and Easy Tomato Chutney

My Mysore Ajji and my Mom, both used to make this chutney for mostly chapathi on Thursday night’s; and on days when there was just tomatoes and no coconut for making chutney. It used to be sweet, tangy, and spicy and very delicious. I used to make this a lot when in Dubai, somehow missed doing it here. Anyway, I was picking up old stuff and found a book which had recipe for Tomato Gojju, and instantly it came to my mind about this chutney.

Tomato Chutney

Tomato Chutney

Ingredients:

  1. 3 large wine ripe tomatoes.
  2. 12 curry leaves
  3. 4 sprigs cilnatro – chopped
  4. 2 tsp red chilli powder
  5. 3 green chillies
  6. 1 tsp each mustard seeds and Jeera.
  7. 1/4 tsp turmeric or haldi
  8. pinch of hing
  9. 3 tsp Jaggery or brown sugar
  10. salt to taste

Method:

  1. In a pan, add 3 tsp oil. When it is hot, add hing, mustard seeds, jeera.
  2. When the mustard seeds start spluttering, add haldi, curry leaves, and tomatoes.
  3. Fry for a few minutes.
  4. Next, add the salt, finely chopped cilantro, and also jaggery.
  5. Close the lid and allow to cook for 7-8 minutes.
  6. Once the tomatoes are cooked, you can serve them as is. That’s how my Ajji and Mom used to do.
  7. However, once the chutney was cool, I grinded it into a smooth paste. This was so that my daughter would not pick out all the curry leaves, green chillies.
  8. finely-ground-tomato-chutney

    finely-ground-tomato-chutney

  9. I served it with Idli  as you can see below; it was just awesome.
Served with Idli

Served with Idli

P.S: With 3 green chillies, the chutney was quite spicy when it was grinded. So, if you are eating it without grinding add 3 chillies, so that you can pick them out. But, if you are going to grind it, add 1 or just 1/2 green chilli.
