How to perform Seva for Sree Raghavendra Swamy

Many of you have asked me about details on performing seva to our beloved Rayaru at home. The link for performing seva at Mantralaya has been posted already. For more details see this post:

I have documented below how we perform seva at my place. This is how I have been doing seva, my Mom, my Sister, My Grandmother and other relatives perform seva. The rituals you follow may be different. So, follow this only if you wish. If you disagree with any of the rituals, better consult a priest or contact the Mutt and find out. I have documented it as a Q&A.

Q. 1: When to perform Seva?

A.1: Perform seva on days you know you will be able to devote the days you wish to perform seva. At any cost, the number of days should not be changed once you start the seva.

Q.2: How many days to perform Seva?

A. 2: Odd number of days. 1,3,5, 7 and so on.

Q.3: What to do if something happens while performing the seva?

A.3: For example, if someone dies, or some other untoward incident happens for which there is a Mailige( not sure what it is called in English) than you stop the seva immediately.

Q.4: Do we always have to keep a coconut?

A.4: Yes, if you are doing the seva for a specific reason, you have to keep a coconut when you do sankalpa.

Q.5: Do I completely fast while doing Seva?

A.5: You can eat just 1 lunch. No breakfast, no dinner. Maybe some milk and fruits in the night.

Q.6: Can I work during seva?

A.6: Yes, you can continue working while doing seva. However, no traveling.

Q.7: Should I take head bath everyday?

A.7: Yes, one should take head bath everyday.

Q.8 What clothes can be worn?

A.8: While performing seva for Rayaru, clothes which are washed and dried separately are supposed to be worn.

Q.9: What Pooje do I perform?

A.9: First, perform daily pooje for God. Next, perform pooje to Rayaru. Offer Gejje vastra, flowers, light lamps, perform aarathi. Recite Rayara Ashtotra, and many more lyrics posted on this blog.

Q.10. Do we perform pooje in the evening also? Should I take shower in the evening also?

A.10. Yes, we perform pooje in the evening also. Many say women shouldn’t shower in the evening. However, since we would have touched so many other people during the day, and at work, we used to shower ( no head bath) in the evening also.

Q.11: How do we decorate the pooja room?

A.11 : Attached is a picture of how you can decorate the room. This picture was taken on Rayara Aaradhane, that’s why you don’t see a coconut. Place a coconut on the right side, and don’t touch it until you finish the seva.

rayara-bday3

Q.12: What flowers to offer?

A.12: We all know our beloved Rayaru loves Roses, so offer Roses. If not available, Jasmine is also fine.

Q.13: What to eat?

A.13: Food with no onion and garlic is eaten. Like I said, just lunch. No dinner, no breakfast. No store brought food. All food should be cooked fresh everyday.

Q.14: What to do with the coconut?

A.15: The day you finish the seva, break the coconut and share it with all your family members.

Q.15: Do we get a dream after the Seva?

A.15: If your bhakthi and devotion has reached our beloved Rayaru, he will definitely come in your dream as himself, or someone else and bless you. In many cases in our relatives we have had dream where an old priest gave us a purna phala, which is coconut, phala mantrakshate, flowers and so on.

Q.16: Other than work, and pooje what else do I do?

A.16: Most time during the seva is spent chanting Rayaru’s name and reading devotional books. No watching TV, no movies, no extra curricular activities.

Q.17: Where to sleep?

A.17: No sleeping on mattress. Sleep on a chape. Remember, t\you are trying to give your utmost devotion & Bhakti. There are many who complain about the rituals, just remember we are doing this since we want. No one is forcing us to do this. If you don’t agree, and think just your Bhakti is enough, so be it.

P.S: Since many of you have asked, hence this post. I have documented what I have been doing. Like you all know, I am a great devotee of Rayaru, and I am even more tough while performing seva. So, this is just a guideline. Make any changes you wish.

MAY OUR BELOVED RAYARU BLESS ONE AND ALL WHO PERFORM HIS SEVA.

Update: Mahalaya Paksha Masa

UPDATE: Tarpana Services at SBAT Temple.
We visited the SBAT Temple today morning to perform the services for my in-laws. Shri. Balakrishna Bhat from Vidyapeetha who is one of the main priests helped us perform the services.
For anyone in the DC area interested in performing the same, attached below are detailed services offered by the temple.

Sri Bhaktha Anjaneya Temple (SBAT) works with a primary idea of propagating the highest values of Sanaathana Dharma and providing the Hindu community an opportunity to lead a spiritual life and perform the various activities as described in the Vedas.

One such important activity is performing pitru-tharpanam (offering oblations to the ancestors) during Mahalaya Paksham to please our ancestors, thank them for their contribution in our lives, seek their blessings and pray for peace and prosperity in all walks of our lives.

The legendary significance behind Mahalaya Paksham can be found in the Mahabharata. Karna, the renowned benevolent hero of the Mahabharata was well known for his charity.   When Karna departs from his mortal body to ascend to the higher worlds, he receives a hundred fold of gold, silver and other riches in return for his great generosity and charity…but only gold and silver without any food.   When Karna prays to the God of Death (Yamadharma), the God of Death tells him that donating / providing  food (Anna dhaanam) is the highest form of charity and that he needs to go down to the earth for a fortnight to make up for what he had not included as part of his charity.

Karna descends back to the earth and for fourteen days he feeds Brahmins and the poor, offering oblations of water (tharpanam).  Upon his return to the higher worlds, he is given plenty of food.  This fortnight Karna spent on earth is called Mahalaya paksham or Pitru-paksham. By the Grace of The God of Death, it is ordained that offerings of food during this period will benefit all the departed souls irrespective of their connection to us.

Such is the importance of pitru-karma and we at SBAT are doing our little bit to help and provide an opportunity to all our devotees to take part in this religious activity.   SBAT requests all devotees to avail this opportunity to perform tharpanam and seek the blessings of the ancestors for a healthy, happy and prosperous life ahead.

Devotees can individually employ the services of the priest to perform the pitru-tharpanam in the convenience of their home, or perform this as the temple.  Devotees that take part in this activity at the temple will be given Maha prasadams (breakfast or light refreshments) after completing their tarpanam.

Please visit our website or call us for more details about employing our services in this regard.

The fortnight (15 days) preceding the Navaratri/Dasara or the second half “Krishna Paksha” of Bhadrapada Masa is called Pitru Paksha also known as Mahalaya Paksha. This period is important for honoring our ancestors. Men, whose fathers have passed away, offer their obeiscence (shraddha) to their ancestors during this period. This year it falls on the following days in the United States and India.
Pitru Paksha – Mahalaya Paksha in India : September 20th – October 5th 2013
Pitru Paksha – Mahalaya Paksha in United States : September 19th – October 4th 2013.
There are many resources available online to assist in giving tarpana and doing shradha for the departed souls of ones family. Attached below are all the links.
If you have any resource, please share.

Our own Sree Shiva Vishnu Temple is performing the same and a donation of $95 is charged and includes dakshina for the priest as well.

P.S: Please refer to dates in your country, and check with elders or temple priests.

Updated : Dasara – Navarathri – October 5th – 13th 2013

Dasara is celebrated all over India as a religious as well as a social festival. Nava means nine and rathri means night and so Navarathri means nine nights. Some call it as Navarathri, some as Vijaya Dashami, and some as Dussehra. Doesn’t matter what you call, does it?

This year Dasara is celebrated from October 5th – 13th 2013. Please check the dates in the country you are residing.

Also, this year I will be in India celebrating the last few days of Dasara. Hopefully, I can capture a lot of pictures and post it as soon as I am back from India.

From day one of the festival, it is customary to keep a Kalasha (ಕಲಶ), this is filled with water(ನೀರು) and 4 betel leaves(ವೀಳೆದೆಲೇ) are arranged as shown below in the pictures.Apply Haldi (ಆರಿಶಿನ) , Kumkum(ಕುಂಕುಮ), and flowers, gejje vastra (ಗೆಜ್ಜೆ ವಸ್ತ್ರ) as shown again. This Kalasha is kept in front of the Pattada Gombe (ಪಟ್ಟದ ಗೊಂಬೆ) which is given during the marriage to the bride. This ಪಟ್ಟದ ಗೊಂಬೆ signifies Lord Srinivasa and Goddess Padmavathi. Again, see pictures below. These ಪಟ್ಟದ ಗೊಂಬೆ are decorated with different jewelery, crown, bangles, dresses every few years.

Pattada Gombe 2

If you are keeping an elaborate Gombe (Dolls), than the Kalasha and the Pattada Bombe are placed on the top shelf. And all other arrangements follow next.

Even though all the 10 days and nine nights are important, there are a few major days where pooja is done with great devotion and pomp.
Those days are as follows:

  • Saraswathi Awahana – October 10th
  • Saraswathi Pooja – October 11th.
