Chakrabja Mandala – ಚಕ್ರಾಬ್ಜ ಮಂಡಲ

Our Guru Sree Madhvacharya has explained in his Tantrasara that “ಪೂಜ್ಯಶ್ಚ್ಹ ಭಾಗವನ್ ನಿತ್ಯಂ ಚಕ್ರಾಬ್ಜಾ ಮಂಡಲೇ”. In English “Poojyascha Bhagavan
nityam chakraabjamandale”.  Worshiping the Almighty Lord with  Chakrabja Mandala – ಚಕ್ರಾಬ್ಜ ಮಂಡಲ as a pedestal or peetha is very rewarding.

So, what is the meaning of Chakrabja Mandala – ಚಕ್ರಾಬ್ಜ ಮಂಡಲ?

  • Chakra means wheel
  • Abja means Lotus in Sanskrit and
  • Mandala is the frame work

I had learnt to draw this when I came to the US several years back from my Brother-in-law Balaji’s ( my sister Suma’s husband) grandmother who was here in the US.

However, due to several reasons this rangoli had completely skipped my mind and I forgot drawing this. During the Shravana Masa, my Little Niece Shwetha, you all know her right? The one who drew our beloved Raghavendra Swamigalu had drawn this for Sree Anantha Padmanabha Vrata. My Sister showed it to me when I visited her house for the festival.

You can see the picture Shwetha has drawn in the picture below, I have a red/yellow arrow pointing to the same. There are two, one exactly below the table, and the other can’t be seen since the God is on top of the rangoli.

IMG_0860

I came back home and started searching the drawing online, to find none. Accidentally I opened the “ಸಾಧನ ದೀಪಿಕಾ  or Sadhana Deepika” book I had, and there it was the Rangoli. It is customary to draw this while performing pooje, and than place the Lord or any God you are performing pooje on top of this rangoli.

I will post a step by step instruction on how to draw this Chakrabja Mandala – ಚಕ್ರಾಬ್ಜ ಮಂಡಲ soon. For the time being attached below are images of the same.

1. This image is from my “ಸಾಧನ ದೀಪಿಕಾ  or Sadhana Deepika” book.

Gowri Ganesha Pictures

I hope you all had a wonderful and joyous Gowri Ganesha Festival. There was not much celebration at my place. I came back today at 10.00 AM from a client site @ Indiana. My Husband Raghavendra is in New Delhi, India for work. My daughter Sneha is at UNC, Chapel Hill. After I came back home, I did the bare minimum pooje, and prayed to Lord Ganesha that a grand celebration awaits him once my Husband and Daughter return home.

I went to my Sister’s place for Lunch, and what a feast I had at Suma’s place. Suma and her Mother-in-Law had prepared delicious dishes and I enjoyed every bite. Thanks so much Suma, and Aunty.

Below is the picture I took of the pooja I did at my place.

Gowri and Ganesha Pooja at my Sister Suma’s place.

Attached below is an email and Picture I received from Mr. Ragothaman

Dear Meera Ma’m,

I did Ganesh Chathurthi in a small way at my place today morning. I bought flowers yesterday and arranged the leaves and flowers around him so that it looks like he is sitting on a flower throne with a flower halo.
Made sweet and savory steamed modaks. I didnt get Jaggery here, since the store selling Indian stuff didnt have jaggery, so made the sweet stuffing with Turbinado sugar crystals, which has same taste and smell like jaggery. Got it at Whole Foods Market. Offered them with coconut and bananas, sugar candy and dry fruits. I hope He was satisfied. :)

Please feel free to share this with your readers.

Thanks and Regards,
Ragothaman

Another email and Picture from Mrudula, Ireland.

Hello Meera

I am Mrudula from Bangalore currently residing in Ireland. We also did our Ganesha Habba with utmost devotion and satisfaction. I’m married to a Tamilian Iyer so the sweets we make are called kozhukottai which was actually my first trial, but they came out good if not better. Guess will learn with practice. I follow your blog often to have a look at the many proceedings of the festivities as well as many many lyrics which my mom sings.

I’m attaching a photo of our Ganesha and would love to see it posted on the blog.

God bless you and your family with good health and prosperity. Awaiting the photos of grand celebration of Ganesha Habba at your home.

with love n regards,
Mrudula Mohana

Gowri-Ganesha Festival – September 18th and 19th 2012

HAPPY GOWRI GANESHA FESTIVAL

MAY THE BLESSINGS OF LORD GANESHA ALWAYS BE UPON ALL.

Ganesha Festival:

Pictures taken at Chandrika’s house last year for Gowri Festival.

Pictures taken in 2008 after the morning pooja at my residence before leaving to work:

The Ganesha festival falls on the fourth day Bhadrapada Masa. That’s why we say “Bhadrapada Shulkada Chauthi Aamdu”. Swarna Gouri Vrata and Ganesha Festival is celebrated on Tuesday September 18th 2012 and September 19th 2012.

An idol of Gowri made of clay is brought two days before the Ganesha festival. Gowri is an incarnation of Parvathi. Gowri Habba, also called as Swarna Gowri Habba is celebrated one day before Ganesha Festival.

The Legend:

Goddess Gowri, while taking shower, created Ganesha out of the mud of and placed him at the entrance of the house. She told him not to allow anyone to enter while she went inside for a bath. Lord Shiva returned home and was stopped by Ganesha at the gate. Shiva became angry and cut off Ganesha’s head. When Gauri came to know of this she was grieved.

Lord Shiva ordered his servants to cut off and bring to him the head of any creature that might be sleeping with its head facing north. The servants went on their mission and found only an elephant in that position. Lord Shiva then joined the elephant’s head onto the body of Ganesha.

Mr. Lakshmisha P, had left a comment here that he had the pdf files for the Swarnagowri vratha puja & katha. Attached below are the links for both the pdf files he has provided.
Thanks so much Me. Lakshmisha for all the support and also the time you have taken to convert this into pdf.

We used to sing at the top of our voice “Ganesha bhanda, kai kadubu tinda, chikka kerele edda, dodda kereli bidda”.

Lord Ganesha is not just worshiped on this day, but is worshiped first in all occasions since he is considered to be the remover of all obstacles, one who brings good luck on new activities or endeavors.

As always links for several resources posted on this blog.

And can any festival be complete without authentic dishes? Here are some recipes posted in this blog:

In case you see the moon on this day, here is the sloka you are supposed to say:

P.S: The above sloka in Kannada is exactly as it is in the Uttaradi Matta Panchanga. Rather than taking a picture, I typed in the words. The English translation is done from the Kannada sloka to the best of my knowledge.

As always no food is prepared with onion or garlic.

Many of you have asked for the Pooja Vidhana of the festival, I do have the book for Ganesha festival, and it is several pages. I had no time at all to translate it into English. So, here is the link for the pooja vidhanas for both Gowri and Ganesha pooja. Hopefully I will have them next year.

Quick and Easy Chakkali

As promised here is a quick and easy recipe for Chakkali which I prepared for Sree Krishna Janmasthami. An earlier version posted can be found here:

1. Simple Recipe for Chakkali

This recipe is even more simpler, and we almost always have all the ingredients at hand.

So, here are the ingredients:

1. 1 cup rice flour

2. 3-4 tsp urad dal flour

3. 2-3 tsp melted Butter

4. 1 tsp Jeera, 1 tsp sesame seeds, 1/4 tsp Hing

5. Salt to taste, Oil for frying.

Method:

1. Mix the Rice flour, Urad dal flour, melted butter, salt, Jeera, sesame seeds and hing. Add enough water to make a tough and smooth dough.

2.Heat enough oil for frying in a deep pan on medium low heat.

3. With the chakkali horalu drop the mix directly in the hot oil  and deep fry it.

4. You can also make chakkalli on a plate, and later drop each one into hot oil.

5. Fry on medium heat, so the inside is also cooked.

6. Take out on a paper towel to drain excess oil.

That’s as easy as it gets. A few simple ingredients and crunchy and yummy chakkali is ready to be eaten.

Now that the Ganesha Festival is fast approaching, try it before and make this for our Lord Ganesha as well.
