Yellu Burfi/Unde – Sesame Squares

For Sankranthi festival, I had brought all the required ingredients from the store. This was mainly because I wanted to offer the same to God and didn’t want to use any leftovers. The yellu this year was just amazing. Take a look at this years picture below.

However, 1/2 of all the ingredients were still remaining. Of course, the only ingredient which I use very rarely is Yellu(Sesame seeds). And, I also had invited a few friends and my Sister’s family on Friday for Dinner. So, I decided to make for the first time ever, Yellu Burfi/Unde. It came out just amazing for the first try and everyone just loved the same as well.  And it took just 20 minutes to make the same as well. Here is the recipe for the same:

  1. Sesame Seeds/Yellu – 1 cup
  2. Peanuts – 1 cup
  3. Dhalia – 1 cup
  4. Jaggery – 2cups
  5. Grated Coconut – 2 tsp
  6. 7-8 cardamom – ground finely
  7. 2 tsp Oil or Ghee(I never use Ghee)

  • Fry the Sesame seeds for 4-5 minutes. Take out in a plate.
  • In a pan, heat oil or ghee. Now add the jaggery. Add just enough water so that the Jaggery dissolves.
  • Keep stirring for almost 9-10 minutes until the jaggery starts leaving the sides.
  • Next, add peanuts, sesame seeds, dhalia and mix well. Let it continue on the stove top for another 3-4 minutes. Add in the cardamom as well.
  • Turn off the stove.  Grease a tray, and pour the mixture. Let it cool a little bit.
  • Cut squares. ANd the left over, was formed to a round shape.
  • Finally garnish with grated coconut.

I called it Yellu Burfi, and everyone called it Sesame Squares. And, that’s why I used the same as well.

Madhwa Navami – Jan 24th 2010

Sri Madhwacharya

Prathamo Hanuman Nama Dwitheeyo Bheema Eva cha
Poornapragna Treetiyasthu Bhagavat Karya saadakaha

We all do know the famous sloka from Sri Madhwacharya:

vande vandyam sadaanandam vaasudevam niranjanam
indiraa pathimaadyaadi varadesha vara pradam

January 24th 2010 is Madhwa Navami. It is the most important day for all Madhwa’s. I can write detailed information about Sri Madhwacharya, but it would all be incomplete. And, I doubt there is any Madhwa house without the picture displayed above.

So, I have compiled useful links for those of you who are interested in knowing more and more about this great philosopher and our Guru.

Madhva Calender for 2009-2010

UPDATE P.S: I have received several hundred requests since the New Year 2010 began. Please understand, the calendar I have is only until March 2010. I don’t have the calendar yet for March 2010 – April 2011.

The calendar is in Kannada, and I don’t have the calendar in any other language. If you can’t read Kannada, this calendar won’t help you either.

Since there is just a few months left in the Madva Calendar, until March 2010, I am uploading the smaller version of the PDF file. Please download the calendar from here. I will not be emailing the calendar anymore.

P.S: I have disabled the “Contact Meera” page for the time being. I am extremely busy, and hence don’t have enough time to reply to several emails I receive everyday. Sorry about that.

If you need anything, leave a comment on the blog. I will definitely reply here.
