Shree Mahalakumi Deviye – ಶ್ರೀ ಮಹಾಲಕುಮಿ ದೇವಿಯೆ lyrics

One of my favorite songs on Goddess Lakshmi to be sung during Vara MahaLakshmi Pooje on Friday. The lyrics are different in different books, and also at the link below for listening to the song.  This song is composed by Shree Vijayavitalla Dasaru.

ಶ್ರೀ ಮಹಾಲಕುಮಿ ದೇವಿಯೆ ಕೋಮಲಾಂಗಿಯೆ ಸಾಮಗಾಯನ ಪ್ರಿಯಳೇ

Ms. Shubha Sridhara has contributed these two slokas.  Thanks Ms. Shubha.

Attached below is Ms. Shubha’s document as she sent it to me.

Dear friends,

As I some requests for early marriage and for having children ,I had some shlokas regarding this. The shlokas are very simple and can be recited  after taking a bath, while doing the  puja to Goddess Lakshmi or Goddess Gowri. Many of my relatives have done this and are happy with the results. I too have done this. I have recited these shlokas many a times, so it is by heart.

This  shloka is for early marriage :

P.S: We are traveling to University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill on Thursday August 19th 2010 evening to drop my daughter for her college studies. We will back at home on Sunday night. So, more updates and comments moderation will be done from Monday August 23rd 2010.

So, until than Happy Shravana Masa, Vara MahaLakshmi Pooje, Upakarma and Raksha Bhandan.

Upakarma Procedure

While cleaning the pooja room last week, found this old worn out paper which had the procedure for performing Upakarma (changing the sacred thread ಜನಿವಾರ as called in Kannada). I thought it would be helpful to most men who visit this blog and so scanned the same. The page as I mentioned is very old, please click on it to see a bigger image.

Kannada -English Dictionary

I was looking for a dictionary from Kannada -English while I was earlier trying to translate Sri Harikathamruta  Sara. I finally found it. I hope this helps the many visitors who wish to translate from both these languages and many times face a tough time really getting the correct work.

Attached below is the link for the PDF and also online version. All credit to the website which scanned and uploaded the same, and also to the author of this Dictionary.

Shravana Saturday Song – ಶ್ರಾವಣ ಶನಿವಾರದ ಹಾಡು

The book I have is really old, and after almost 3 retires the scan came out Ok. I have attached all the pages to the PDF, enlarge the PDF to 200% and you should be able to see the lyrics properly. This song is to be sung during Saturday’s in Shravana Masa,

Handbook for performing Festivals

I received an email from a mailing list which I have subscribed, which had links to several books on Hinduism. As I was browsing through the content of the web site which had several important books scanned, I found this simple and very well explained book which has details of all the festivals, the rituals which needs to be followed and so on.. This book is in Kannada. You can read the book online or even download a PDF file, whichever is convenient to you all.

Attached below is the link for the book:

P.S: The details for all the many festivals coming during Shravan Masa starts from page 32 onwards.

Thambittu – ತಂಬಿಟ್ಟು

Thambittu or ತಂಬಿಟ್ಟು as it is called in Kannada, is prepared for many festivals and most importantly doing Aarathi to God using the same. So, attached below is 1 quick and easy recipe for the same.
How to prepare Thambittu?

There are many different type of Thambittu. It is made of rice flour (ಅಕ್ಕಿ ಹಿಟ್ಟು) , wheat flour(ಗೋದಿ  ಹಿಟ್ಟು) and Dhalia or Hurigadale(ಹುರಿಗಡಲೆ).

So, here is a simple recipe which you can do in just minutes. This is the recipe my Mom used to make. Easy and simple and can be done in less than 15 minutes max.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup finely ground Hurigadale or Putani or Split Dalia ಹುರಿಗಡಲೆ
  • 1 cup finely chopped Jaggery or brown sugar ಬೆಲ್ಲ
  • 5 tsp Ghee ತುಪ್ಪ
  • 1/4 cup desiccated coconut ವಣ ಕೊಬ್ಬರಿ

Method:

In a pan, add the jaggery, ghee and just enough water to dissolve the jaggery. Let it boil for almost 5-6 minutes , until all the jaggery is dissolved. Next, add the ground Hurigadale and mix well. Also add coconut.

When it is cool to handle, form the shape of a laddu. And make a small hole in the center such that you can place a bathi for lighting the lamp.

Add ghee to the bathi, and place in the center. Make 5 such and do aarathi.
