I’ll tell you the way we do it. On Avahana day, in the evening you freshen up yourself and with a white cotton thread you need to make Ashtami dhara. For lakshmi you make two 16 strands of thread, the length should go around your neck, one 8 strand, and one 5 strand. And then depending on the number of people in your family, you make 16 strand for married women, 8 strand for married men and 5 strand for each child. And then in a silver katora take some milk and add some turmeric and dip these strands in the katora, cover it with a small plate and place it next to your shravana gouri . And on top of the plate you do laxmi avahana, by offering haldi-kumkum, akshata and flowers. And offer milk and sugar naivedyam. That takes care of avahana, you can sing some laxmi or any bhajans while doing the strands. The next day you do Jeshta devi pooje, in the morning prepare naivedyam with various vegetables and sweets. In india my mom used to make 16 types of vegetables and chutneys and 5 types of sweets and various kinds of rice. But nowadays its not practical so I stick to 3 vegetables, but like mixed vegetables, and make atleast holige and paayasa. Then you do your regular laxmi pooje, offer naivedya. You make two naivedyams for both laxmi and jyestha devi, cover them with a plate and leave it like that till the next day. The next day for visarjana, after taking shower, take the strands and make as many knots in the strands as the number of strands, for eg, if you have the 16 strand thread, you need to make 16 knots, so make sure you have taken enough length of thread, because after 16 knots the strand gets smaller. While making the knots, keep adding the flowers and gejjevastra(cotton garland) in between. Once you have done making the knots in all the strands. you need to tie it to each family member their respective strand. And the lady of the house will have to add the two 16 strands, one 8 strand and the one 5 strand along with her own 16 strand. After everyone is done getting their strands you can distribute the naivedyam from the previous day among all the family members. And you can start taking away the pooja materials. The wheat in the shravana laxmi pot has to be saved and to be made payasa for family members only.
    Jai mahalaxmi!
