My sister Meera visited Mathura, the birthplace of Krishna and Brindavan and she even posted excellent pictures of the temples. Apart from these towns, Dwaraka in Gujarat and Gokul in Uttar Pradesh are well-known places associated with Krishna. (There are several other places in Uttar Pradesh associated with Krishna and they are all together known as Braj Bhoomi) However, not many know that the place where Krishna left his mortal body is near Dwaraka and that it too is in Gujarat.
Historians and archaeologists have calculated the date of the current Kali Yuga as midnight of February 17 or February 18, 3102 BC. This is the very day Krishna breathed his last in a place called Prabhas Theertha in Gujarat. This is also the place where Gomathi River joins the sea. .
Sri Krishna left this planet earth with His own body and reached Sri Vaikuntham. The place where He left this world is called Prabhasa theertham (the junction point where Gomathi River joins the sea) in Gujarath.
Prabhasa is also called as Ban Ka Theertham.Krishna came to this place after the Mahabharata war was over and after Dwaraka was destroyed by the sea and the Yadava clan wiped out (Gandhari, wife of Dhritarasta had cursed Krishna that he would die along with his clansmen as he had failed to avert the Mahabharata war which had led to the death of thousands of people, including almost all the Kauravas.)
Krishna was saddened by these events and he was reclining beneath a tree with one of his legs outstretched. A hunter, Jara, mistakes the foot of Krishna for a deer and he shoots his arrow tipped with an iron mast. The arrow pierces the sole of Krishna and he dies. An aghast Jara is full of remorse but Krishna consoles him and says he has done nothing wrong.
Jara was an incarnation of Angada, the sone of Vali. After the Ramayana war, Rama asks vanaras (monkeys) what they want.Angada, the son of Vali, says he wants to avenge his father’s death. Rama, who had killed Vali at the instance of Sugreeva, says Angada cannot have his revenge now but in the next life. Rama was reborn as Krishna and Angada as Jara.
The entire episode of Krishna and Balarama leaving their mortal bodies is contained in Mausala Parva which is a part of the Mahabharata. There are also references to Krishna and his life in the Bhagavatha Purana, Matsya Purana and Bhagavath Geeta according to which we may conclude that Krishna left Dwaraka 36 years after the Mahabharata war ended. We can arrive at almost the exact date of the Mahabharata war as the Matsya Purana stsates that Krishna was 89 years when the war began.
The Matsya Purana states that Kali Yuga began when Bheema brought down Duryodhana to the ground after they played out a long drawn Gaada Yuddha.
