Lemongrass Tambuli (ನಿಂಬೆಹುಲ್ಲಿನ ತಂಬುಳಿ)

Ms. Bhavana Damle has sent the recipe for LEMONGRASS TAMBULI (ನಿಂಬೆಹುಲ್ಲಿನ ತಂಬುಳಿ). Thanks Bhavana for the wonderful recipe.

Lemongrass has tons and tons of medicinal value and Ms. Bhavana has shared some of them Courtesy Times Of India.

Lemongrass is a herb cherished for its aroma and citrus-cum-ginger taste. It is also known as citronella and its botanical name is cymbopogon citrus. It is widely used in Asian cuisines, especially Thai, Malaysian and Vietnamese. Besides culinary purposes, lemongrass possesses a lot of medical and health benefits. Some of them are as follows:

Lemongrass contains anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties. It is useful in treating infections of the stomach, colon, urinary tract and wounds.

It helps to cure diseases like typhoid, skin infections, food poisoning and body odour.

Because it contains analgesic properties, lemongrass oil helps in relieving pain from headaches, joint pains and muscle pains.

Lemongrass possesses anti-pyretic properties that is beneficial in bringing down fever. Therefore, lemongrass is administered to people having fever. (courtesy : Times of India)

Here is a recipe made by lemon grass.  LEMONGRASS TAMBULI (ನಿಂಬೆಹುಲ್ಲಿನ ತಂಬುಳಿ)

Ingredients:

  1. 2 long lemon grass leaves cut into small pieces
  2. 6 Insulin leaves cut into small pieces ( optional)
  3. 1tea spoon grated ginger
  4. 1 teaspoon fresh coconut
  5. I small tender green chilly
  6. 2 cups butter milk
  7. Salt to taste
  8. ½ teaspoon oil, mustard, urad dal, curry leaves and turmeric powder for seasoning.

Method:

  1. Grind the first five items to a fine paste adding a little water.
  2. Then strain the same into a bowl.
  3. Add salt, buttermilk and seasoning (ಒಗ್ಗರಣೆ).

You can drink it as a starter before meal or can eat it mixing with rice. You can also use it at the end of the meal instead of curd or buttermilk.

In Brahmin community a meal never ends without curds or buttermilk. (We call it ವಂದನಾರ್ಪಣೆ -vote of thanks). In these chilly days we can use this tambuli as an alternate to curd rice with no fear of getting cold.

For more details on Lemongrass read this link on Wikipedia.
