Chooda Avalakki – ಚೂಡಾ ಅವಲಕ್ಕಿ

We grew up in Bijapur. My mom used to make the most delicious Chooda avalakki, she does it even now in B’Lore. I am sharing her recipe here. Thanks Mom.

My Daughter takes ಚೂಡಾ ಅವಲಕ್ಕಿ every time she goes back to Chapel Hill, NC. She keeps it for months and eats it with Yogurt. She loves it just like I do. Something which both mother and daughter have in common, right?

Chooda Avalakki

1 ½ lbs Thin Poha or Nylon Avalakki
1 tsp. mustard seeds
1/2 cup peanuts or Shenga
1/2 cup Putani or Hurigadle
7-8 uppu hachida menasinakayi (salted green chillies)
5-6 spoons dried coconut powder
2 tsp red chilli powder
2 tsp Chatni puddi
7-8 curry leaves
7-8 Salted Chillies
1 tsp Haldi
Hing to taste
Oil around 7-8 spoons

Microwave the Poha for about 2 minutes.
In a pan, heat the oil. Add mustard seeds, haldi and hing. Now add the salted green chillies. Fry this until it changes color. See the picture.
Now add peanuts, putani, red chilli powder, coconut powder, chatni pudi, curry leaves, salt and sugar.
Once all these ingredients are mixed, add the poha and mix well in a low heat.
