In most Madhwa houses, as I have mentioned several times in my posts onion is a big no no. On days when we are not supposed to eat rice, like when you fast in the night during Shravana Masa, or even every Thursday’s we make this Upma.
Cabbage has many many health benefits. Finally, it is the most cheapest vegetable out there and full of costly nutrients. How about that? 🙂
To read more about what all nutrients cabbage has take a look here.
2-3 tsp Oil, and 1 tsp mustard seeds, 1 tsp channa dal, 1 tsp urad dal, 1/2 tsp turmeric, pinch of hing for seasoning
Method:
First, in a non stick pan or any deep vessel fry the rava continuously until it turns golden brown. Make sure it doesn’t burn out. Transfer this onto a plate.
Next, add oil. When it is hot enough add all the seasoning ingredients one after another. Add green chillies and curry leaves also. Add the cabbage and 3 cups of water and cover. Let this boil until the cabbage is cooked. Now add the Vangibath powder, salt, sugar. Once this boils as well, slowly add the rava. While you are adding rava, make sure there are no lumps, so keep stirring continuously. It should look watery when you have added all the rava.
Now, cover the vessel, and cook on slow fire for another 15-20 minutes, once the rava is cooked, add coconut, finely chopped cilantro and lemon juice.

ಮೆಂತ್ಯ ಸೊಪ್ಪಿನ ಬಾತ್ – Methi Vegetable Rice is an all time favorite at my place. Everyone in the family just loves this rice dish. It is quick, easy and can be prepared for any festival.
Ingredients:
2 cups Basmati Rice
1 whole bunch Methi leaves, washed and finely chopped
1/2 cup french beans, and a fistful of green peas
1 big piece of Ginger
For seasoning: Oil, mustard seeds, Hing, Turmeric
3 tsp Vegetable Bath Powder ( Vangibath Powder)
For garnishing : Cilantro, and some lemon juice
Method:
Wash the rice and cook the rice. Make sure it is fluffy.
Microwave the beans and peas so they are cooked, but still have a crunch.
In a pan, add oil and all the ingredients for seasoning.
Now, add the methi leaves and fry them until they are cooked. Add the grated ginger as well.
Add the cooked vegetables.
Mix them and make sure they are all cooked.
Now, add salt to taste, and the Vangibath Powder and mix well.
Add rice and season with cilantro and lemon juice.
Serve with any Raita.
P.S: You can use other vegetables also like Potatoes, Capsicum, Brinjal and carrots. For this one, I liked to use the green vegetables. So, mix and match any vegetables you like. No onion and garlic please. It takes over the wonderful smell of methi and other vegetables. One such variation with the same recipe but different vegetables like Potatoes, Capsicum, French Beans, Corn, Peas and carrots is shown below.
I am not a big fan of bread. I rarely bring bread. However, my Daughter loves bread, and that too whole wheat. I just don’t like the texture of whole wheat bread. I rather eat chapathi, than bread.
When she was home for Christmas, she and her Father made this whole wheat sandwich which tasted really good. It requires simple ingredients we all have at home.
My Daughter Sneha suffered from severe cold, cough and fever last week before she left to College. She had sore throat and kept asking me to make ಮೆಣಸು ಜೀರಿಗೆ ಸಾರು – Menasu Jeerige Saaru for three straight days. I made the Saaru with Toor dal one day and Moong dal the next two days. This really helps in soothing your throat and feels really good when you have fever as well. And as we all know, both ಮೆಣಸು Menasu and ಜೀರಿಗೆ Jeerige has medicinal values. You can eat this saaru with rice, or drink it like a soup. Simple, quick and easy.
Ingredients:
3/4 cup Toor dal or Moong dal (ತೊಗರಿ ಬೇಳೆ or ಹೆಸರು ಬೇಳೆ )
