How to perform Seva for Sree Raghavendra Swamy

Many of you have asked me about details on performing seva to our beloved Rayaru at home. The link for performing seva at Mantralaya has been posted already. For more details see this post:

I have documented below how we perform seva at my place. This is how I have been doing seva, my Mom, my Sister, My Grandmother and other relatives perform seva. The rituals you follow may be different. So, follow this only if you wish. If you disagree with any of the rituals, better consult a priest or contact the Mutt and find out. I have documented it as a Q&A.

Q. 1: When to perform Seva?

A.1: Perform seva on days you know you will be able to devote the days you wish to perform seva. At any cost, the number of days should not be changed once you start the seva.

Q.2: How many days to perform Seva?

A. 2: Odd number of days. 1,3,5, 7 and so on.

Q.3: What to do if something happens while performing the seva?

A.3: For example, if someone dies, or some other untoward incident happens for which there is a Mailige( not sure what it is called in English) than you stop the seva immediately.

Q.4: Do we always have to keep a coconut?

A.4: Yes, if you are doing the seva for a specific reason, you have to keep a coconut when you do sankalpa.

Q.5: Do I completely fast while doing Seva?

A.5: You can eat just 1 lunch. No breakfast, no dinner. Maybe some milk and fruits in the night.

Q.6: Can I work during seva?

A.6: Yes, you can continue working while doing seva. However, no traveling.

Q.7: Should I take head bath everyday?

A.7: Yes, one should take head bath everyday.

Q.8 What clothes can be worn?

A.8: While performing seva for Rayaru, clothes which are washed and dried separately are supposed to be worn.

Q.9: What Pooje do I perform?

A.9: First, perform daily pooje for God. Next, perform pooje to Rayaru. Offer Coconut, Fruits,  flowers, light lamps, perform aarathi. Recite Rayara Ashtotra, and many more lyrics posted on this blog.

Q.10. Do we perform pooje in the evening also? Should I take shower in the evening also?

A.10. Yes, we perform pooje in the evening also. Many say women shouldn’t shower in the evening. However, since we would have touched so many other people during the day, and at work, we used to shower ( no head bath) in the evening also.

Q.11: How do we decorate the pooja room?

A.11 : As you would decorate for any other pooja. Place a coconut on the right side, and don’t touch it until you finish the seva.

Q.12: What flowers to offer?

A.12: We all know our beloved Rayaru loves Roses, so offer Roses. If not available, Jasmine is also fine.

Q.13: What to eat?

A.13: Food with no onion and garlic is eaten. Like I said, just lunch. No dinner, no breakfast. No store brought food. All food should be cooked fresh everyday.

Q.14: What to do with the coconut?

A.15: The day you finish the seva, break the coconut and share it with all your family members.

Q.15: Do we get a dream after the Seva?

A.15: If your bhakthi and devotion has reached our beloved Rayaru, he will definitely come in your dream as himself, or someone else and bless you. In many cases in our relatives we have had dream where an old priest gave us a purna phala, which is coconut, phala mantrakshate, flowers and so on.

A few in my family has never had a dream. So, don’t get disappointed if you don’t get any dream.

Q.16: Other than work, and pooje what else do I do?

A.16: Most time during the seva is spent chanting Rayaru’s name and reading devotional books. No watching TV, no movies, no extra curricular activities.

Q.17: Where to sleep?

A.17: No sleeping on mattress. Sleep on a chape. Remember, you are trying to give your utmost devotion & Bhakti. There are many who complain about the rituals, just remember we are doing this since we want. No one is forcing us to do this. If you don’t agree, and think just your Bhakti is enough, so be it.

Q18: Where can find all the songs and lyrics to recite?

A18: This blog has several songs and lyrics. Take a look at the following link:

P.S: Since many of you have asked, hence this post. I have documented what I have been doing. Like you all know, I am a great devotee of Rayaru, and I am even more tough while performing seva. So, this is just a guideline. Make any changes you wish.

Maaam , is the Seva done at home and in Mantralaya different.?
One of the Sevas would be doing Pooja for rayaru and having only one meal for the day right ?
Also since I have rayaru photo in our house temple ,it would not be possible to do pradhakshine . Is that ok ? Is there anything else I could do.

I have never done Seva to Rayaru so was not sure how we could do .

  3. Thank for sharing this Article, please do suggest whether we can do Madhu(Honey) Abhisheka to Rayaru (Idol) while reciting ‘Rayara Stora’ on all 3 days while doing Sava.

Please ask someone in the temple. I also have no idea.

    • Posted by Padma on May 21, 2020 at 10:44 am

Usually thulabhara seva is done by making the person sit on one side of weighing bridge, and the other side instead of weight, you have to keep sugar or banana or whatever you like..It should balance the weight of the person. This is what in kerala temple we do.

      • Posted by meeraghu on May 23, 2020 at 2:45 pm

This is different, we also do tulabhara seva the same way you mentioned.

You have mentioned odd number of days.. Does it have to be only odd number of Thursdays or odd number of consecutive days… Is there any specific day to start this vrata and how many days would you actually recommend the vrata to be performed

Namaste Mam, my wife has filed false Dowry, DV & Diverse case on me and demanding money from me. I did Sankalpa seva to Rayaru 6 times now and but things remain unchanged. Previously Rayaru had fulfilled my desires many times after I did Sankalpa seva, but in this case I am still not finding an answer

Please advise if there is any other Seva I can perform. And also why Rayaru is delaying in blessing me in this court cases. I have not done any mistake.

Please help me to do a good Seva to Rayaru and explain its Vidhana please

    • Posted by meeraghu on June 18, 2019 at 5:21 pm

Of course. Can you not ask two gifts to your parents? Rayaru is also same, ask as much as you want. It depends on how much you have accumulated in your bank balance and you will get the benefits accordingly.

    Dear Meera Ma’am,

I want to do sankalpa seva for my father’s health, he has heart problem and probably has to undergo heart surgery, can I do this seva by keeping Raghavendraswamy’s photo and other pooja items in a clean corner of my room, our devaru manne is small and crowded with idols and pooja items, do I have to keep rayaru’s photo in some particular direction (south, east…), is it better if idols of Shri Ram( or Shri Narasimha,Shri Krishna, Shri Venkateshwara) , hanuman and Raghavendraswamy are used for the pooja, how do I energize yantrodharaka hanuman coin and pray to it? Please help and guide me, I am ready to do any seva for my father’s successful surgery…

    • Posted by meeraghu on January 9, 2019 at 3:58 pm

Hi Deepti, I will pray for your fathers successful surgery. Yes, you can keep the photo in a clean corner, finish God’s Pooja and than do poole to Rayaru. Light lamps, offer flowers, recite stotra and do as many pradakshina as possible. Have faith and Rayaru will bless your father.

    • Posted by seemalv on January 9, 2019 at 6:17 pm

Put your complete faith in rayaru and you will definitely see miracles- I have experienced this in a health problem with my father. Trust my words. Bhakti and faith matters the most.

Chitra, that’s awesome. Rayara has blessed you and taken your Seva. Super.

  24. Posted by Chitra Vittal on December 20, 2018 at 7:46 am

Recently (since October 2019) I went twice to Mantralaya and did Rayaru Seva for 3 days with full devotion and madi. First I did in October month. After reaching home, that night, I got a dream as if Rayaru Brindavana is following me and my hand was held tight. subsequent to this, one of the nights, I got a dream as if I am preparing to to Mantralaya again along with my mom and performing seva. So, based on these two dreams, I again went to Mantralaya in December and did 3 days seva. From then on, every night (almost) some thing happens to me in my sleep and I wake up with full of anxiety and end up feeling that I have lost some thing and I have missed something in seva and I have not done it properly.

What does it mean? I dont know what to do further. Please help me and advise if this is a bad omen. Is Rayaru unhappy with me for something.

So now, I started doing pooja every Thursdays at home itself. Still this dream is continuing.

    • Posted by meeraghu on December 20, 2018 at 11:36 am

Chitra, you have done nothing wrong. Just have faith, and remember Rayaru is karunamayi. Nothing to worry, just focus on good things, and good things will happen. Keep chanting his name.

      • Posted by Chitra Vittal on December 27, 2018 at 5:55 am

Thank you so much Meera Ji.

A couple of days before (after my post), I again got from sleep. I got a feeling that I have completed my seva. This was like some conversation between me and another (I dont know who it is and what it is and who is talking to me in my ears). I am not able to see anybody in my dream. But, the conversation ended saying that my seva is over and the other (who so ever its) acknowledges it.
After this incident, I am not getting any disturbances in my sleep.

I am concluding that Rayaru has accepted my seva finally. Probably something was due or pending which is completed now.

Thanks Meera ji once again for your motivation.

Hello Meera, what is the alternative for coconut? It is because we have to offer good ones for sankalpa/naivedya. Most of the times, they are not good after breaking it. So, I want to know if I can keep kallu sakkare or milk for sankalpa.

    Hi Mam,
As soon as i go to mantralaya, Whom should i contact before starting sankalpa seva ?
Is there any priest who does sankalpa before starting pradakshine ?
What do i do with coconut i take . Is it offered to rayaru ?
After finishing the pradakshine , Do we have anything to be followed or offered ?

    • Posted by meeraghu on September 14, 2018 at 9:48 am

You can contact the priest there. Anyone should be able to do it. Coconut is used to prepare a sweet dish and consumed by you and your family. That’s all it is. No hotel food while doing seva, no onion no garlic, 1 time food only. And keep reciting Rayaru japan and Stotra. All the best Rahul.

I have been a devotee of sri guru Raghavendra swany from my childhood. Our family lineage is attaced to Rayara mutt.
I would like to narrate one of the miracles happend to me and my wife.
Met my wife for the first time at Shree Guru Raghavendra mutt in Jayanagar 5th block, Bangalore in the year 2011
Met my Father in law at the same place for the first time & discussed my willingness to marry his daughter. After couple of days he accepted & he came to our house along with family.
When we were about to start marriage disucions, a flower from the lord Ganesh photo which was hung on the wall, fell on the ground right in front of us. It was one of the wonderful experiences.we took it as lords acceptance to our marriage
After a month, i went with my family to their house(Harihar) to finalize the marriage dates.
During our visit, we visited Raghavendra temple. When both the families were sitting in from of Rayara vrundavana,it happened again!! A flower from the Rayara vrindavana fell down showing that we had his acceptance.
It was on May 19th 2011 (THURSDAY), i got marrried. we were trying for a baby, during this process we had to visit so many hospitals, undergo treatment and so on. Parallely we also started various sevas to many dietes.
We also performed Seva to rayaru several times. At last, our long wait of 5 years was over, Our rayaru blessed us with a beautiful Girl baby on 02.05.2018 which is again on Thursday
The hospital in which our baby was born is located exactly in front of the same Rayara mutt.

Very recently we named her as “AGAMYA”. I searched in one of the old scriptures and selected this name.
But on the Naming ceremony day, i realized that this name is also a part of rayara Ashtottara.
“Aagamya mahima loke Raghavendro maha yasha ha”.

To summarize in short: He is there everyehere, just we need to have the heart to feel, eyes to see and mind to belive in him.
    “OM Shree raghavendraya namaha”

Should we do pradakshina after pooja? If yes then how many ?

    • Posted by meeraghu on March 12, 2018 at 8:20 am

You can keep it separately also. I keep it separately so I can do 108 namaskaras. I do God pooje first, and than Rayaru pooje. As many as you can, 5,11, 21 or even 108.

  34. Posted by Sandeep on February 8, 2018 at 4:43 am

Thank you very much for giving information…. I lost my job, when I newly married it was a very tough time for me and my wife. As I read you posted about pooja for Rayaru, and followed the same procedure done Seva of 11 Thursdays and got job by grace of Rayaru (but Rayaru didn’t come in my dream) and also we both visited Mantralaya. Now after One and Half year finished (In the One and Half year again we visited to Mantralaya with my parent, My parent are very devoted to Rayaru) , now my job is in trouble, so I had done 3 continues days seva of Rayaru very strictly following the procedure to get job in other good company & salary in my dream companies. Something I was expecting someone will call for an interview, no one called me still yet now, so I little bit disappointed. I thought something went wrong while doing seva. Now again I am doing seva for 7 Thursdays.. I finished 5 Thursdays …. I am not getting any positive till now … Why Rayaru is not blessing … Is anything wrong from my side. I don’t know what to do.. Is there any other Seva for Rayaru ..

    • Posted by meeraghu on February 8, 2018 at 7:18 am

Sandeep, have faith. We all go through tough times, and that includes me as well. Many times I have done seva for days and not to be rewarded. Sometimes it is our purva janmada karma which we have to reap. Have patience and faith. Light is there at the end of the tunnel.

Sri Guru raghavendra swami nee namaha.
I am a humble devotee of swami, long back, Swami came to my maternal house miraculously.. I am finishing my three days vrata Pooja today. I am chanting poojyaya raghavendrayaaya sloka for pradakshinam. The book I have, have 16 lines in it..Is the beginning two lines only chanted or full sloka I could chant? I am doing ten pradakshinam and one namaskara, thus 11 namaskara..So that I complete 108 pradakshinam.. Anyway the space for pradakshinam is not so big..May swami bless all..

  43. Respected madam,

Quick question to you – I am planning to do this pooja at home. In the past I have done this pooja at home and always asked for one desire or wish. I was wondering if it’s okay to do this pooja and ask rayaru for 2 wishes?

    • Posted by meeraghu on October 29, 2017 at 6:07 am

      Sure, why not?

      • Posted by seemalv on October 30, 2017 at 7:37 pm

        Hello again,

I started the pooja today and after my pooja, I came out of the room. After sometime I realized that the diya had fallen on the carpet and was burning the carpet and I took care of it with water. Is this a bad omen? After this happened, I am feeling so bad.

What actually happened was that next to rayaru, I had placed lord balajis photo and it didn’t have proper support. So it fell and made the diya to fall on the carpet.

        Feeling so bad:(

      • Posted by meeraghu on October 30, 2017 at 11:58 pm

Seema, that’s what they say, but for me it is an accident. I always consider that when we are doing seva it in itself is a good omen. So, don’t let it bother you too much. Keep faith, and continue with your seva. Don’t feel bad, Rayaru is taking your seva, that it self is great omen.

      • Hi again. Is there a chance I can get your email ID? I needed to ask you something privately if that is okay. My email is

Can we end the seva before the desired days. Like we had started for three days and can we end for one day..

  48. Posted by Anu Sankhavaram on June 23, 2017 at 11:48 am

    Meera ji,

If you don’t mind could you please share how you do the pooja during seva in an order of steps.
How do you do namaskaara 108 times? Do you do pradakshine around Rayaru’s picture and do namaskaram for every pradakshine?
I also read that you have been to Mantralaya recently and did namaskaram 108 times.
Could you please explain how you did it.
Thank you so much for your help.

    Thank you

    • Posted by meeraghu on June 26, 2017 at 7:06 pm

Yes, pradakshina around Rayaru picture. The first time I did namaskara for every pradakshina, after that no. My knee was hurting very bad. In Mantralaya yes, I did namaskara after every pradkshina. I did 108 in two shifts. 51 in the evening, and the remaining next day morning.

Do we do seva after the fulfillment of our wish or before fulfillment of the wish.

    Thank you

    • Posted by meeraghu on June 9, 2017 at 4:56 pm

You can do before and after. That’s how we have done, once before asking for help, and later for fulfilling our wish.

    Meera Ji,
    Om Sri Raghavendraya Namah !!

During Seva when we take shower in the evening should we also wear madi clothes? How do you wash clothes for madi? Can I have a fruit in the afternoon for lunch and eat dinner? Would really appreciate your answer.

    • Posted by meeraghu on April 11, 2017 at 4:08 am

Yes, I usually wash clothes in the morning, dry them separately and use in the evening. Yes, food wise you can eat fruits and dinner. Like I have been saying this is just a guideline, do as you wish with utmost devotion. Rayaru will definitely accept the seva.

  55. Posted by chaitanya on March 27, 2017 at 12:55 am

I heard that one should not wear shoe, slippers while going out / work and shouldn’t use any soap, shampoo while bathing?? Is it true..

    • Posted by meeraghu on March 27, 2017 at 11:13 pm

I do seva as much as possible, since most of the time I am working and have to look good, smell good and wear shoes. All depends on you. If you stay at home, you can do as strictly as possible.

    • Posted by meeraghu on December 1, 2016 at 7:35 pm

Rohit, our beloved Rayaru is karunamayi, so don’t hesitate to eat if you can’t keep fast. Eat fruits, have milk anything which is not forbidden. I have seen it is bhakthi that Rayaru wants, nothing more.

  80. Posted by Sharad on February 23, 2014 at 4:31 pm

    Hello Meera,

I am planning to do sankalp seva for 3 days at Mantralayam. I will go from Delhi. Can you or anyone else please explain that what does 3 days mean? Suppose I reach Mantralaya on Sunday night and start seva from Monday morning then will 3 day seva end on Wednesday night or Thursday morning? Secondly, do I need to carry pooja things from Delhi or can I buy every thing at Mantralayam? Do I have to wear a gents dhoti or cotton pants is ok? Any response will be greatly appreciated.

    Om Sri Raghavendraya Namah

    Thank you.

    • Posted by meeraghu on February 23, 2014 at 5:16 pm

3 days will be over on Wednesday night. I would suggest carrying everything from Delhi. Gents Dhoti, no pants allowed while doing seva. Hope this helps.

May our beloved Rayaru bless you.
