Tulasi Pooje Preparation 2013:
Uthwana Dwadashi – Tulasi Habba or Tulasi Pooje is celebrated a fortnight after Deepavali. It signifies the day Tulasi married Lord Vishnu. On this day, Tulasi katte is decorated like a bride. Amla trees are planted along with the tulsi plant.
Pooje to be done in the evening.
What’s Tulasi?
In most Hindu homes, you find a Tulasi plant growing out of a Tulasi katte . Tulasi is considered to be a holy plant and is worshiped every morning. Tulasi has medicinal value and is often used as a herb in curing the common cold and cough.
So what’s Tulasi Habba?
Tulasi came out of the ocean during Amrita Manthan as a younger sister of Lakshmi. She too was devoted to Lord Vishnu and wanted to marry him. But Lakshmi who was already married to him did not like the idea and cursed her to become a plant. Thus the tulasi plant was born. But the all merciful Lord Vishnu took pity and fulfilling her wish declared that when he will be in the form of a saligrama, found in most temples and madhwa houses, she will remain close to him in the form of a tulasi leaf. Therefore even today a saligrama will have a tulsi leaf along with it. In front of every Hindu home there will be a tulasi katte in which a plant grows round the year.
Although the prayers are offered to Tulasi everyday by watering the plant in the morning and lighting an oil lamp before it in the evening, on Kartik Shukla Dwadashi there will be an annual Tulasi Pooja in the evening when the tulasi katte will be beautifully decorated with clay lamps.

Hi Meera. I see fresh coconut that you have for nevedhya to offer it in the Pooja. How do you grate it? What do you use to grate it? Nice Tulasi Pooja pics.

We have hand held grater. I also break it into large pieces and grate using the normal grater. Thanks Sindhu.

We had it from many years, and stored the seeds so we could replant again and again. It was given to me by my Sister.

My mother used to celebrate every year in the evenings inviting ladies for arishina kukma and offering them milk and kosumbari along with tambula, By the time we used come from office the ambiance created by the deepa and agarbatthi smell. Still i remember the songs sung by her

You have posted a wonderful article on the details/significance of this habba. I may have visited your site a long time ago but somehow forgot about it. As I was looking for maavinakayi chitranna recipe today, this blog popped up and I am so glad it did! My mother celebrated uttvana dwadashi in a big way (like they did every other festival!) and she invited lots of women for thambula in our backyard where the tulasi katte was. My father helped decorate it with lights etc. I have fond memories of it all and seeing your article brought back all those memories. I celebrate big habbas like Dasara (typical Mysore style), Gowri/Ganesha, Varalaxmi vrata etc. but had not been doing these smaller ones. Given that you are in the eastern US as I am ( I am an IT professional too) and you are celebrating these smaller festivals, I am inspired to do it too. Your blog is very inspiring in terms of slokas etc. as I sing and like learning new songs/hymns/slokas etc. Sorry for the long rant, just got too excited about this post.

Thank you for posting information about tulasi marriage.I am following your blog from few months and am very happy to know the correct way of doing pooja.I have few doubts about tulasi vivah:
1.I don’t have tulasi plant but I kept silver tulasi plant in puja mandiram.so planning to do pooja to silver tulasibrindavan.Can you please tell me how to do puja.
2.Can you translate the tulasi vivaha procedure attachment in english.
