Avidhava Navami – September 30th 2021

This Thursday September 30th 2021 is Avidhava Navami I was told by my Brother and Father. I had never ever heard of this special day. Found out from both of them that for women who are Mutaides and leave this world before their Husbands, and while husbands are still alive this special day is celebrated during Paksha Masa.

The word Avidhava means one who is not a widow or sumangali. According to our scriptures, Avidhava Navami is to be observed till the husband of the sumangali is alive.

I felt a deep pain listening to this, since it is now happening to our mother.

For those of you who have lost your Mothers, this is the day to give Bhagina for married women in the name of your mothers. Many of you may have lost your Sisters, Aunts, grandmothers and if their husbands are still alive is when this is celebrated. So, take a moment to donate on this day.

Let’s take the time to remember them, pray for them and seek blessings from them.

With due respects to you Ma’m, I beg to differ with the notion ‘According to our scriptures, Avidhava Navami is to be observed till the husband of the sumangali is alive’. I sincerely request you to go through the exhaustive writeup by Shri Vishnudasa Nagendracharya w.r.t Avidhava Navami with the link provided below.

Prahllada Avare. It is confusing when we receive so many messages which contradict each other. See this one I received just today.
      Avidhava Navami

Vidhava means Widow. “ Avidhava ” means not a Widow – Sumangali. Avidhava Navami in the context of Pitru Paksham is the day on which cermonies/rituals are to be performed for those Women (Mothers) who died as Sumangali.

It should be performed by the son/s on the Navami tithi day during Pithru Paksha. Avidha Navami is followed by those who have lost their mothers and their father is alive. They have to do it on Bhadrapada Krishna Navami day. They have to invite Mutthaide – Brahmana Dampatigalu. Give them marada baagina (ಮರದ ಬಾಗಿನ) containing all saumangala items like haridra, kumkuma, coconut, rice, dalls, blouse peace, villedele, adike, dakshine, if possible sarry, blousepiece, etc..

On this day, pinda pradhana to be done. Atleast tila tarpana to be done. Here during Avidhava navami, unlike paksha (wherein all the forefathers will be called), only his mother, mother’s in law and great grand mother will be called and pinda pradhana will be done.

      Narahari Sumadhwa
      Sumadhwa Seva
