2015 – Ganesha Festival Pictures

It was a blessing performing the pooja of Lord Ganesha. Since it was a week day, I had taken a day off. We also had invited a few families for evening Pooja and Dinner. I read the Story and we had a wonderful time. The feeling of performing the pooja and sharing it with others brings such joy to ones state of mind.I have no words to express those in English, nor does the dictionary have any words.

My Sister, Niece and my Husband ate on Banana leaf sitting down for lunch. I served them the food. The items I prepared were:

  1. Moong Dal Kosambari
  2. Channa Dal Kosambari
  3. Bean Playa
  4. Potato Methi Palya
  5. Chatni
  6. Plate Idli
  7. Modaka
  8. Kadabu
  9. Capsicum Rice
  10. Gulab Jamun
  11. Rasam
  12. Winter Melon Majjie Huli
  13. Thove
  14. Papad
  15. Last but not least Yogurt

Dinner for my family and Friends in the night was on Steel plates. We had lots of good discussions in the night during the blog, the posts. Quite interesting. Humbled again by how popular this blog has become and how it has changed lives of many in our community.

I kept praying to Lord Ganesha that he overcome all the obstacles in ones life.

A few pictures for you all to enjoy until next year.

The Ganesha festival falls on the fourth day Bhadrapada Masa. That’s why we say “Bhadrapada Shulkada Chauthi Aamdu”. Swarna Gouri Vrata and Ganesha Festival is celebrated on September 16th and 17th.

As always, check your closet temple to find the correct dates.

An idol of Gowri made of clay is brought two days before the Ganesha festival. Gowri is an incarnation of Parvathi. Gowri Habba, also called as Swarna Gowri Habba is celebrated one day before Ganesha Festival.

The Legend:

Goddess Gowri, while taking shower, created Ganesha out of the mud of and placed him at the entrance of the house. She told him not to allow anyone to enter while she went inside for a bath. Lord Shiva returned home and was stopped by Ganesha at the gate. Shiva became angry and cut off Ganesha’s head. When Gauri came to know of this she was grieved.

Lord Shiva ordered his servants to cut off and bring to him the head of any creature that might be sleeping with its head facing north. The servants went on their mission and found only an elephant in that position. Lord Shiva then joined the elephant’s head onto the body of Ganesha.

Mr. Lakshmisha P, had left a comment here that he had the pdf files for the Swarnagowri vratha puja & katha. Attached below are the links for both the pdf files he has provided.
Thanks so much Me. Lakshmisha for all the support and also the time you have taken to convert this into pdf.

We used to sing at the top of our voice “Ganesha bhanda, kai kadubu tinda, chikka kerele edda, dodda kereli bidda”.

Lord Ganesha is not just worshiped on this day, but is worshiped first in all occasions since he is considered to be the remover of all obstacles, one who brings good luck on new activities or endeavors.

As always links for several resources songs, lyrics and stotras are posted on this blog.

P.S: If you would like to get email updates on when new articles are added, you can subscribe by clicking on the left hand side on the “RSS Feed“. It will take you to a new page, and you can enter your email ID.

And here comes the link which has colorful and many designs for drawing Rangoli

And can any festival be complete without authentic dishes? Here are some recipes posted in this blog:

In case you see the moon on this day, here is the sloka you are supposed to say:

ಚೌತಿ ಚಂದ್ರ ದರ್ಶನ ಅಪವಾದ ಪರಿಹಾರಕ್ಕಾಗಿ

ಸಿಂಹಃ ಪ್ರಸೇನಮವಧೀತ್
ಸಿಂಹೋ ಜೌ0ಬವತಾ ಹತಃ |
ಸುಕುಮಾರಕ ಮಾರೋದಿಃ
ತವಹ್ಯೇಷ ಸ್ಯ್ಮಮಂತಕಃ ||

Simha prasenamavadith
simho jambhuvatha hathah |
sukumaraka marodhihi
thavahyesha syamanthakaha ||

P.S: The above sloka in Kannada is exactly as it is in the Uttaradi Matta Panchanga. Rather than taking a picture, I typed in the words. The English translation is done from the Kannada sloka to the best of my knowledge.

As always no food is prepared with onion or garlic.

Many of you have asked for the Pooja Vidhana of the festival, I do have the book for Ganesha festival, and it is several pages. I had no time at all to translate it into English. So, here is the link for the pooja vidhanas for both Gowri and Ganesha pooja. Hopefully I will have them next year.

P.S:  If you have a scanned copy of the Ganesha Vrata Pooja Vidhana, please share. I can post it here.

Steamed Modaka – ಮೋದಕ Recipe

Modaka

So many of you had asked for the recipe for Modaka – ಮೋದಕ prepared during Ganesha Festival. I had not prepared this one in a long long time. Last year I tried the same and it came out just delicious. We ate it with a dollop of Ghee. Yes, you heard it right, Ghee for a change.

So, here is what you require for preparing this.

Ingredients for the Coconut Filling:

  • 2 and 1/2 cups freshly grated coconut
  • 2 and 1/2 cups Brown Sugar, or Powdered Jaggery
  • 5 Cardamom
  • 2 tsp Poppy Seeds, Gasgase fried in Ghee (optional)

Method:

  • In a heavy bottomed pan , mix both the Coconut and Jaggery as shown below.

  • Keep stirring the mixture and make sure it doesn’t stick to the bottom and burn.
  • After, 10-15 minutes, the mixture will change its color to dark brown
  • If it is too think, just add 2-3 drops of water.
  • Once it becomes thick, add the ground Cardamom, and Poppy seeds.

Ingredients for the Dough:

* 1 cup rice flour
* 3/4 cup water – be judicious here
* pinch of salt
* 2 tsp oil

Method:

  • Boil water in a pan. When it is boiling add salt, oil.
  • Slowly mix the rice flour and keep stirring.Turn off the stove.
  • When it is easy to handle and still hot, keep kneading the dough.
  • When the dough is well kneaded, take a small ball in your palm, flatten the edges, keep the filling and close it.
  • When you have completed all of them, place in a pan and steam it in a cooker.I used the Idli stand, steamed 4 at a time.
  • Place it in a plantain leaf and offer to Lord Ganesha.
