I had only planned three part series. Yesterday while talking to my father he said he read an article in one of the books on how Sri Gopala Dasaru had written the Keertane mentioned below and told me the details. It was heart touching and I was overwhelmed by the enormity of what my Father told. And as always, I have to share it with you all, right?

Sri Gopala Dasaru visited Tirupati every year during Brahmotsava. In those days, remember Sri Gopala Dasaru lived from 1722 – 1762, there was no public transport. It would take months for them to travel from the place he lived in Uttanooru, Karnataka to Tirupati. He would take his mother along with several of his discliples.

Bhagganna like he was called, didn’t make any preparations to travel to Tirupati. His mother always called him ಕೂಸು ( Koosu). She was very sick at that time. She asked ” ಕೂಸು( Koosu) why are you not getting ready to leave for Brahmotsava, are you not going this year”? Dasaru said ” Amma, how can I leave you and go, I have never done that, so I am not going”. Isn’t it not mentioned in the Vedas ” मातृ देवो भव। पितृ देवो भव। ” – Maathru Devo Bhava |Pithru Devo Bhava “. I am not leaving you while you are sick and going to visit Tirupati.

Mother felt very bad and said because of me this year you are unable to see the Lord. What did I do, ಕೂಸು( Koosu). At that time, Dasaru asked his mother ” Amma, do you want to see Brahmostava, do you want to see Lord Venkateshwara”. Mother says, who doesn’t want to see Lord Venkateshwara, ಕೂಸು( Koosu). Yes, I do want to see.

Dasaru picks up his aged mother, carries her to the balcony and makes sure she lies down on a soft mattress. Brings his Tamboori and Tala, composes and recites the song. That’s how great devotee he was Aparoksha Gynani. And treated his Mother like God. Dasaru was able to bring the Lord himself so his mother could see him.

The book my Father was reading didn’t mention further what happened. The full lyrics I have posted below in both Kannada and English. There are many variations in several books I read.

The lyrics I have posted is from the book I have: Samagra Dasa Sahitya vol12

Gopala Dasaru and his Disciples – Part 3

Srinivasa Charya (the future Jagannath Dasa) came to Gopala dasaru on the orders of Vijaya dasaru. It is popularly believed that when he was suffering from stomach pain as a result of disobeying Vijaya Dasaru, Gopala dasaru relieved it by giving him Jowar Roti.

Every year, Gopala dasaru used to go to Tirupati’s brahmotsava without fail. Once Srinivasacharya went to Tirupati with him and was climbing a hill on foot when he fell sick and died. There are many stories about how Gopala dasaru became famous for his miraculous behavior like when Gopaladasa remembered his teacher Vijaya dasaru and donated forty years of his life to Srinivasacharya by chanting Dhanvantari stotra.

Gopala dasaru had a group of disciples. Srinivasacharya, as instructed by Gopaladasaru, went to Pandarapura and bathed in Bhimarathi, got the ‘Jagannath Vithala Ankita‘ and got the name Jagannathdasa. Gopaladasaru’s family gave Ankita to his three brothers. Senappa and Dasappa became Aparoksha Jnani like there brother. Helavanakatte Giriamma was one of Gopaladasa’s most prominent disciples. It is said Gopaladasru had realized Lord Krishna in Rangoli for Giriamma.

On Pushya Krishnashtami (1762 AD) of Chitrabhanu Samvatsara, Gopal Dasaru died in Uttanoor .

There is a house where Gopaladas lived in that town. In the kirtan written by his brother Senappa Dasaru about Gopaladasaru, Kambani says, ‘Anna Bhaganna nee kanni ke mai mai punya lokava bhaitya’. Another psalm deals with Anna’s birth, pilgrimage, formation of words and Madhvamata campaigns. Through such structures, folk stories and literary creations of Gopaladas we get to know about his life and personality.

Bhaganna Becomes Gopala Dasaru – Part 2

P.S: Gopala Dasara Aaradhane – Jan 14th Saturday USA, Jan 15th India

Part 1 in case you missed : https://meerasubbarao.wordpress.com/?p=12077

Gopala dasaru’s first name was Bhaganna, popularly known as ‘Bhaktana in Bhakti‘, there is not much information about the life of Gopaladasaru. The only reliable source is ‘Gopala Vithalara Charitara Pada‘ written by Gopala dasaru’s brother Ranga dasaru. A few things are also known from the works of Gopala dasaru. Along with these, the popular stories about Gopaladasru can be checked.

Gopaladasaru  was born in 1721 at Masarukalli in Devadurga Taluk of Raichur District. His father was Murari, his mother Venkamma, his grandfather – Mudgallappa, Bhaganna was the eldest, and he had three brothers namely Dasappa, Sheenappa and Rangappa. They also belong to Dasakuta. They were an ordinary farmer family. His ancestors were not versed in Shastras or puranas.

After the death of his father, Murari’s property was dissolved. Mother Venkamma brought the children to Sankapur as life became difficult. He came to Uttanoor after seven years. An abandoned hut outside the town became their abode. Venkamma used to go from house to house begging and raising children. She prayed to the teachers of that town and educated her children. Bhaganna’s Upanayana took place with the son of Shanubhoga Gundappa of Sankapur. Sermons, agnikarya, gayatri mantras were all held. People were surprised to see that Bhaganna, who was like a normal child before, was acting like a learned  miracle man.

A significant change took place in Bhaganna’s life after seeing Vijaya dasaru. It was Bhaganna who received initiation from Vijaya dasaru and got the title ‘Gopala Vithala‘ and became Gopala dasa. There is a record in Chippagiri about the year when the inscription was granted. According to it ‘Kshayanama Samvatsara Margashira Shuddha Tayodashi Friday Ashwini Nakshatra Hanumanteva Vrata Sangam Kalavu’ means AD. In 1746 Gopaladasari was given an inscription.

After this Gopaladasa started composing hundreds of songs, ugabhoga’s and suladis. Later he also initiated his brothers. Dasappa, Seenappa, Rangappa got the titles ‘Gurugopal’, ‘Varadagopal’ and ‘Tande Gopala’ respectively. Thus, not only Gopaladasa but also his three brothers contributed to Haridasa literature Important point.

Shri Purandara Dasara’s time was the golden age of Dasa Sahitya.

The services rendered by Purandara dasaru and Kanaka dasaru to the fields of music and literature of Karnataka are memorable and unmatched. After them Dasa Sahitya took the path of decline. With the fall of Vijayanagara empire this literature also lost its vibrancy.

Around 1687, Haridasa literature was revived by Vijaya dasaru, and the second phase of Haridasa literature began. The motivation of Sri Raghavendra Gurugalu of Mantralaya was instrumental. Vijaya dasaru became famous as the Mahatma who revived the Dasa tradition. His most important disciple was Gopala dasaru.

Gopala dasaru is one of the noblemen who is hailed as the pillars of the Haridasa legacy. Dasa Sahitya in the first phase was popularized by Purandara Dasaru-Kanaka dasaru later Vijaya dasaru, Gopala dasaru and Jagannatha dasaru took lead in the second phase.

Gopala Dasaru composed works in three genres namely Kirtana, Ugabhoga and Suladi. There are 183 Kirtana’s in the book I have referenced here. A small kirtana with only three words and a large kirtana with thirty words can be found in his compositions. Ugabhoga are few in number. The philosophical proposition that he has expressed in Suladi and Ugabhogas is worth noting. He was the one who enriched the Haridasa literature by using music lyrics in equal measure.
