Neem Flowers and Jaggery

Happy Ugadi –

An email I received from Ms. Bhavana Damle shows how ಬೇವು – ಬೆಲ್ಲ -Neem flowers and Jaggery are used during the Ugadi festival.

Bevu - Bella

marIchi hiMga lavaNa ajamOdika sharkara |
tiMtriNI mElanaM kRutvA bhakShayEt rOganAshanaM ||

marIchi= black pepper = ಕರಿ ಮೆಣಸು
hiMga = Asafoetida = ಇಂಗು
lavaNa = Salt = ಉಪ್ಪು
ajamOdika = ajwain seeds = ಓಮ ಕಾಳು
sharkara = sugar = ಸಕ್ಕರೆ
tiMtriNI = Tamarind = ಹುಣಸೆ

Bhavana Says:

Dear Meera,
We prepare bevu – bella on Ugadi mixing above items with tender neem leaves. But we add jaggery instead of sugar.We crush them together and eat on this auspicious day. This is very tasty also.
