This song was composed by the great sage Adi Shankaracharya some time around 810 AD. This song is sung in praise of Goddess Chamundeshwari and describes the way She destroyed many demons.

Mahishasura Mardini Stotram or Mahishasur Maridhini Sloka is a very popular devotional stotra of Goddess Durga written by” Guru Adi Sankaracharya (Sri Sri Sri Shankara Bhagavatpadacharya)”. This devotional verse is addressed to Goddess Mahisasura Mardini, the Goddess who killed Demon Mahishasura. Mahisasura Mardini is the fierce form of Goddess Durga Maa (an incarnation of Goddess Parvathi), where Durga Maa is depicted with 10 arms who rides in a lion or tiger and carrying weapons and assumes symbolic hand gestures or mudras.

Namasthe Smt.Meera-avare,
A couple of days ago I was searching for Sri Mahishasura Mardini Sthothra, in Kannada Lipi, and reached your blog-site. Your work is remarkable, which shows your great Samskaara. Excellent and keep it up. I pray the Mother blesses you and showers her best on you & your family.
I have a tiny contribution – I transliterated the Sri MahishasuraMardini Sthothra to Kannada Lipi, using Baraha 7, and want to share it with you and your friends / readers. Since I cannot attach the document here I am uploading it to one of my web-pages. I have uploaded the Baraha Version as well as a PDF version suitable for quick printing. You can download them and publish them on your site. The links are : http://home.att.net/~jyothishya/files/MahishasuraMardiniSthothra.pdf and http://home.att.net/~jyothishya/files/MahishasuraMardiniSthothra.brh .
I also referred the Sanskrit versions at : http://sanskritdocuments.org/all_pdf/mahisha.pdf and http://sanskritdocuments.org/all_pdf/mahisha_mean.pdf , and have incorporated a few small corrections. If there are any more mistakes / errors, please feel to point it out to me at JagadeeshBC@gmail,com.
With Best Wishes , and Hearty Wishes on the Occassion of NAVARATHRI and DASARA CELEBRATION. May Mother Chamundeshwari shower her choicest blessings on you.

Hi Meera,
Please accept this comment as a suggestion or request. My uncle who is a Pandit or prohit and having a ragavendra swamy mutt of his own have suggested me not to read mahishasura mardini at home.
Since it was not mentioned in Madhwa Shastra anywhere. There is no Ankita in it. Please do not mistake me for this suggestion since we have discussed lot about madhwa philosophy i have written this. Not to hurt any readers or followers. Kindly let me know your feedback on this.

Dear Meera, thanks for the great post. The complete lyrics in English will be very useful for a wide audience. This Mahishasura Mardini Stotra was composed by Ramakrishna Kavi, probably around the 15th century CE or later. Some oral traditions claim that Ramakrishna Kavi is none other than Tenali Rama of Krishnadevaraya’s court. But historians have not been able to confirm it. As of now, very sadly nothing is known about Ramakrishna Kavi. The great philosopher Adi Shankara lived much earlier in the 9th century CE and did not compose this one. Only some time after the 1990s, random people (not scholars) on the internet have started claiming that is was composed by Adi Shankara. If possible please change this info at the top of this post.

Thanks for your reply. About 25 years back I have purchased a book from a book stall near Guruvayoor temple. This book contains Malayalam version of Mahishasura Mardini Stotram. Unfortunately that book has been lost recently and therefore I am searching Malayalam version of this great prayer. If you have the same kindly send it or else give the address from where I can purchase it.
Regards
