ಆಷಾಢ ಮಾಸ – Ashada Masa – June 20th – July 19th 2012

ಆಷಾಢ ಮಾಸ or Ashada Masa starts June 20th and ends on July 19th 2012 in ನಂದನ ನಾಮ ಸಂವತ್ಸರ  Nandana Nama Samvatsara. This entire month is considered inauspicious. Newly wed couple are not allowed to stay in the same house. And in some families I have also seen that Mother-in-Law and Daughter-in-law don’t stay in the same house as well. No idea who or how these beliefs came into existence.

During this month, there are no marriages, upanayanas, or any good deeds performed. However, it is during this month that the Chaturmasa Starts, and the last day of ಆಷಾಢ ಮಾಸ or Ashada Masa is Bhimana Amavasya.More about this festival later in the month.

Stay tuned for our most auspicious month – ಶ್ರಾವಣ ಮಾಸ  or Shravana Masa coming soon.

This month is very sacred for Devi Pooja’s. All Ashada Shukravara pooja for lakshmi and Asta lakshmi Pooja is in Ashada. Also Andal jayanthi and special pooja madurai meenakshi are a few to name some good things.

May be we should have new perspective in this regard.

    My perspective

Here in bay area priests from Udipi and Gokarna have scheduled upanayana and Wedding in the coming following week – 4 functions that I know of. These priests are scholarly people.

Given the monsoon rains in India, it makes sense that doing celebrations is difficult in that unfavorable conditions. They have designed a good way of doing pooja for goddesses at home rather than wedding etc.

But times have changed. Olden days no one would cross the ocean, and if they did they should take ಪಂಚಕವ್ಯ. If we go from here we will get sick drinking that. How many of us drink this when we go from here? At least for people who live her we need to redefine strategies.

Also we visit India during school holidays here. It invariably happens during June -July. We need to be with our in-laws also during this time. We do not have any choice.

Thinking about the other side of the hemisphere, it is mid winter there. The same planetary configuration does not apply there. These festivals are tide to the motion of celestial bodies.
Summer in India is over in Feb-April where they have lots of events like ರತೋಥ್ಸವ and Rama Navami. Here Summer starts now and weather related logistics are completely different. We have to reevaluate with respect to changing times and come up with new definitions? we should find some one who can give us good insight and change the stigma associated with Ashada accordingly. again this is my perspective and nothing else.

    Thank you all
    Best Regards
